Sydney World Pride 2023

Martial Arts Championships

In the spirit of building an LGBTI Global Martial Arts Community The SWPMA Championships we would like to offer a multi-style Martial Arts Tournament that offers opportunities to promote sporting excellence in the Martial Arts, as well as development of Self Defence and Safety Skills.

Tournament Director Penny Gulliver 6th Dan Black Belt and Chief Instructor GLMA Martial Arts and Well known LGBTI Pioneer initiated these championships to extend the  LGBTI  global sporting village to Sydney attaching it to Sydney World Pride the most exciting and innovative FESTIVAL that has certainly that been held in the Southern Hemisphere is not The World (2 reasons to visit us!!!!)

The Tournament will include:  Non-Contact Point Sparring, Self Defence categories, Forms, Weapon forms, performance opportunities, workshops from overseas guests and more. A free Self Defence Workshop for World Pride participants and allies will be run on Thursday 23rd Feb 2023.

Event selection will take place as part of the registration and checkout process. Ticket admission grants the holder access to register for multiple events as part of the registration process. You can enter as many events as you like!

*While some of our competition divisions are separated by gender in many categories, all members of the LGBTQIA+ community- and allies  are welcome to participate in all experience , age , (will be sorted after registration ) qualifying categories and may self-identify and sign up to participate in the divisions that fit and work for them and they feel comfortable in.

*Previous experience is recommended. Email organiser if you want further information.

* Besides usual equipment head gear must be worn  in all sparring events

Rules & Categories

Rules and categories will be organised with the guidelines of The International Association of Gay and Lesbian Martial Artists [IAGLMA] www.iaglma.org -- the organisation that traditionally runs the Martial Arts Events at The Gay Games since the 1980s.

Judges Workshop 

6 30 am- 9 am Iaglma Board Members will run a workshop on the rules of the tournament - Black Belts are able to get judging accreditation by attending for the tournament. All are encouraged  to attend to understand the rules - 

18th February

KGV Recreation Centre

 The Rocks, Sydney 

Tournament Day 1

9pm-6pm Events Day 1 will be forms , weapons , and open events - precise schedule will be released  when we have a sense of numbers post registration -

19th February

KGV Recreation Centre

The Rocks, Sydney 

Tournament Day 2

9 am- 2 pm Schedule Day 2 with will be point sparring and self defence events - a precise schedule will be released post registration when  we have a greater sense of numbers .

21st February

Overseas Guests Workshops

Overseas guests who  will be asked to do 30 to 45 minute workshops to  to broaden the knowledge of martial artists attending the tournament.This provides an opportunity to learn from  our martial  arts leaders who are visiting - their knowledge and expertise .

Community Free Self Defence Workshop

6 30 pm -9 pm  This workshop is for the all attending  in Sydney World Pride  and  the community generally to be aware of personal safety when they  are out about - Tournament participants are also invited to attend . Physical and psychological strategies will be taught .
